The Canon Pixma TR8550 includes several important features in its folding table design, including duplex printing, Bluetooth and a huge touch screen, which makes it especially easy to use.
Most of Pixma’s Canon inkjet printers are geared towards the printing of great photos, such as the impressive Canon Pixma TS8050 of six inks, but the Canon PIXMA TR8550 is geared directly to the Home Office. As such, it has only five (instead of six) ink cartridges and adds a document feeder and duplex printing. The inclusion of a fax installation puts this machine in the competitive category of four-in-one compact multifunction. For about £199 (about US $265, AU $355) is quite expensive.
And this model is really compact. Canon considers that it is 38% smaller than the MX920 it replaces, keeping two separate paper trays in front and back and a 20-sheet ADF on top. What Canon offers that the average MfD does not offer is a large 4.3-inch touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity plus Wi-Fi and a fifth ink cartridge to improve print quality.
Canon Pixma TR8550 Design
Printers for the Home Office have been getting progressively smaller and the Canon Pixma TR8550 is an excellent example. With all the tabs and trays folded, it’s a little larger than the Canon family-oriented photographic printers and still incorporates a 100-sheet main paper tray, a 20-sheet back paper tray for photo paper and envelopes, and An automatic 20-sheet Document feeder (ADF) at the top.
It looks smart and sophisticated, with the extra large touch screen occupying most of the front panel and you probably wouldn’t refuse this discrete printer by sharing your desk.
Canon Pixma TR8550 Features
The Canon Pixma TR8550 is 1 4-in-one, which means that the print, scan, copy and fax boxes are all marked, this is a feature-rich machine and canon did well to include luxuos such as a 4.3-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth connectivity for The money.
Bluetooth complements built-in Wi-Fi and makes it even easier to ensure a stable wireless connection with a smartphone so you can use the handy Canon Print app, while the touch screen makes it easy to use and monitor at a glance.
Instead of four ink cartridges, there is an extra pigment to improve the quality of text and photo. You can say that this printer was made by a camera brand, because it also has an SD card slot and can connect to Canon wireless cameras via PictBridge.
Essential features, such as duplex printing and connectivity to cloud services like Dropbox, are also present, which means the only items missing are NFC connectivity (although Bluetooth does this) and a front USB port.
Configuration and operation
The 10.8 cm color touchscreen may look like an unnecessary extravaganza for a printer, but the requested price for this model is still low and certainly makes installation and operation easier than it would be without it. Getting started is simply a case of following the instructions and printing the test sheets when prompted
The touchscreen proves its value when you need to enter the password for your Wi-Fi network. It’s not as sensitive as your smartphone’s screen, or of course, but it’s faster than the tricky buttons you usually have to face
The Canon print application is also very useful when it comes to scanning and printing. Canon uses the application to offer its own cloud printing service, although this takes some time to set up.
We found that the Canon Pixma TR8550 is fairly slow when it comes to printing duplex mono text pages, but it was worth waiting for the pages. The additional cartridge provides black pigmented ink in addition to the four dyes, which gives the printed words a rich darkness, maintaining a delicate touch. Very small stitch sizes are as clearly defined as large letters.
The extra ink also adapts to colourful documents, with vivid and well-contained colors and black, uniformly filled throughout. Photographs on photographic paper are particularly well shaded, accurate and colourful.
Adding a fax and ADF and keeping the cost low, some sacrifices in print quality were made. Despite this, the Canon Pixma TR8550 produces monochrome, color and photographic prints that will impress.
The size and style of this surprisingly compact printer will please anyone who works in a tight office, while the huge 4.3-inch touch screen facilitates everything from setup to checking your workflow, a little Easier.
Pixma TR8550 selects all the features a Home Office may need, including duplex printing, separate paper feeds for plain and photographic paper, and an ADF. Bluetooth, in addition to Wi-Fi, ensures an easy connection with the Canon Print app and this extra ink cartridge gives each text document a crisp, bold finish, while the photos look rich and vivid.
By adding a fax and ADF that looks a lot like the Pixma TS8050 photo printer, Pixma TR8550 gains some volume, compromising its print quality. It is also quite expensive to run, with this additional black pigment cartridge which means you have to buy five instead of the four usual replacements.
For the money, and we’ve seen some significant discounts on this model, the Pixma TR8550 has a lot to offer. To begin with, the compact size is an achievement, as it has three separate paper feeders, five ink cartridges and a 4.3-inch touchscreen display. It also provides the essentials, such as duplex printing, and sending high-resolution scans to the cloud through a companion application. Also prints mono, color and photos with great quality. Like many ink cartridges based on cartridges, however, ink substitution is expensive.
